The community of West Hill became official after the establishment of its post office in 1869 and was largely made up of Irish settlers who came here from County Cork in Ireland because of the devastating potato famine of 1845. The neighbourhood was nicknamed Corktown.

Fun fact: While in Scarborough, one of our greatest complaints is that we lack adequate or environmentally sustainable public transit, back in 1906, there was a streetcar line that ran from Queen Street and Kingston Road all the way to West Hill!

The first West Hill School was built in the 1880s and was one of the oldest schools in Toronto. The school we are in today, erected in 1994, is built on the same site as the original structure.

West Hill P.S. serves approximately 250 students, more than 30% of whom come from countries other than Canada. Many of our families are temporarily housed in our community as they await more permanent settlement in the G.T.A.. Each year, as many as 400 students will pass through our doors.
